5 cops injured, 3 detained as protesters clash with police in Kakrail
Five policemen were injured and three people were detained after a group of protesters clashed with on-duty police personnel at the Kakrail intersection today following a protest procession which was brought out from Baitul Mukkaram today.
Sajjad Hossain, deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police's (DMP) Ramna division, told The Daily Star "Five policemen were injured in the clash. Three attackers have been detained from the scene."
The clash occurred after protesters started marching from Baitul Mukarram National Mosque towards Kakrail following Juma prayers this afternoon, our staff correspondent reported from the scene.
"The protestors threw brickbats at police from the march while police charged batons, tear shells and rubber bullets to disperse them," our staff correspondent said.
"The procession then spread to the surrounding alleys. Several people, including a photojournalist, were seen injured in the brick attack," he added.
Traffic on the road was halted during the clash. Rapid Action Battalion (Ram) members arrived at the spot after 2:15pm. While filing this report at 2:30pm, the situation there was relatively calm.
